October is here and that means it’s time for the annual service promotions hosted by the City of Douglas. During the month of October, citizens are invited to learn more about public services and participate in various activities.
Get ready to declutter your space for free this fall! Public Works/ESG Operations is thrilled to announce our Fall Junk Free Week from Monday, October 6 to Friday, October 10, 2025. Join us between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm at 1101 Shirley Avenue, located at the intersection of Shirley and College Park Drive, to dispose of your large household items and junk at no cost. This service is available for all residents within the Douglas city limits. Whether you’re looking to clear out your garage or attic or simply make space in your home, this is the perfect opportunity to do so at no cost. Please note, however, this offer does not include the disposal of tires or hazardous chemicals. Items must be loaded onto a trailer or placed in a location where the clam truck can easily access them for unloading. There will be no staff on-site to assist with unloading. To participate, all you need is a copy of your utility bill as proof of residency. Don’t miss out on this chance to clean up and clear out!
As a part of the Faith & Blue Initiative, the DPD will partner with The Sanctuary (714 Waldroup Ave.) for Trunk or Treat on October 29, 2025, 6pm-until the candy runs out. The Faith & Blue Initiative was launched to facilitate safer, stronger, more just, and unified communities by directly enabling local partnerships among law enforcement professionals, residents, businesses, and community groups through the connections of local faith-based organizations. Special thanks to Trunk or Treat partner, The Sanctuary. For more information, please call (912) 384-2222.
The Douglas Natural Gas Department will be promoting Natural Gas Month throughout October. In preparation for the cooler months, customers can call to schedule a free pilot lighting – a $10.00 savings! To schedule your free pilot lighting during business hours (M-F 8:30 am-4:30 pm), please call the Natural Gas division at (912) 389-3427. Public Power Week will be held Oct. 6 – 10, 2025. This week, customers are encouraged to “Thank a Lineman” and become more educated about the public electric services provided by the City of Douglas.
The Douglas Fire Department will host Fire Prevention Month and collaborate with the National Fire Protection Association for Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 5 to October 11, 2025. This year’s campaign is titled “Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” The campaign aims to educate everyone on the importance of safely buying, charging, and recycling lithium-ion batteries. The Fire Prevention Education Safety House will be utilized in conjunction with fire education programs for all ages through fire prevention presentations in schools, daycare centers, and other places of business. Douglas Utility customers can register at City Hall (302 S. Madison Avenue) for a drawing to be held on October 25, 2025, for free smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Through these educational, family-oriented activities, residents can learn about the importance of fire prevention and fire safety. For more information about Fire Prevention Week or Douglas Fire Department outreach programs, call (912) 384-4815.
