County commissioners approved the bids for the Premier Sports Complex soccer fields, the purchase of a new excavator for the road department, and conducted the first reading of a rezoning request from Carlton “Pig” Dorminey for 10 acres on Highway 32 West from R1, Residential to C, Commerical, among other items of business, at last week’s regular county commission meeting.
Two years ago, the city and county received grants for recreation facilities improvements at the Premier Sports Complex. The city used its funds to refurbish the Huckaby Complex. The county’s grant is going to make improvements on the soccer field. The Huckaby complex has been completed; the soccer field work, however, has not. The project includes new fields, a parking lot, and concession stand. Last Monday, the commission granted the project to Harper and Company Builders for $4,094,295. Most of the price tag will be covered by a $2.2 million grant. Funds from SPLOST VII will take care of the rest of the project.
Commissioners also held the first reading of a rezoning request from Carlton Dorminey. The property is located at 3662 Highway 32 West and is a 10-acre tract of land. Dorminey plans to build a warehouse or commercial establishment on the property. The Planning Commission and staff have no problems with the request. At next month’s meeting, there will be a public hearing and a vote on the request.
Commissioners also approved the following agenda items:
- The purchase of a Sany SY-225 excavator for $175,000 from Perry Brothers;
- The closure of 1.43 miles of roads in Town & Country Mobile Home Park for the purpose of making improvements to the roads. The owners of the park made this request. In order to grant the request, the roads would be taken off the county’s list and designated as private roads;
- The engineering contract for road re-surfacing projects throughout the county. Statewide Surveying will do the engineering work for $127,860.94. Of that, $107,869 will be for county roads while the remainder will be for roads in Ambrose, Broxton, and Nicholls. Each year, the county manages their road projects for a small fee.
- The county tabled awarding the bids for the re-surfacing projects mentioned above. The re-surfacing projects are for the 2025 local road assistance disbursements from the DOT and the normal 2026 LMIG disbursements as well.
Commissioners also signed proclamations National 4-H Week and Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
