Earlier this week while assisting with the Brantley County wildfire, a dog found a couple of Douglas firefighters and took advantage of their generosity. And everyone was perfectly fine with it.
Paxton Gilbreth and Stephen Wheeler, firemen with the Douglas Fire Department, were fighting a fire in a portion of the Brantley County wildfire when, out of nowhere, a brown and white bulldog came up to them. The dog was in distress and needed help badly.
Gilbreth and Wheeler gave the dog water and moved him away from the flames. The dog, who was obviously used to being around people, made himself at home in the Douglas fire truck. At one point, the dog climbed up in the dash and stretched out, finally free from the fire that had no doubt been raging around him for quite a while.
The dog stayed with them for the better part of the day. Then, when Gilbreth and Wheeler returned to the staging area, the dog apparently felt sufficiently recovered. He jumped out of the truck and took off, never looking back. “That dog just used them,” laughed one firefighter.
The dog probably did – and everyone was OK with it. The scenes coming out of that fire have been heart-breaking – homes lost, businesses destroyed, lives altered forever. But even in the midst of such tragedy, you’ll hear uplifting and inspiring stories.
Consider this one such tale.
