Around 1:30 a.m. on May 13, 2026, a Douglas police officer arrested Deavious Ferrell, 37, of Nicholls, after he allegedly abandoned suspected illegal drugs during a traffic stop.
An incident report states that the officer made the traffic stop on Highway 32 when he observed a 2010 Nissan Altima fail to maintain its lane. The driver, identified as Ferrell, got out of the vehicle and emptied his pockets. The officer could smell marijuana on Ferrell, the report states, and Ferrell admitted to smoking marijuana earlier. As he emptied his pockets, he threw a Newport box on the ground into a yard behind him. The report says that Ferrell stated he did so because the box was empty. A dog in the yard started chewing on the box, the report states.
Ferrell was handcuffed and placed in the back of a patrol car. He allegedly scattered marijuana in the back of the car while he was there.
Another officer on the scene retrieved the cigarette box from the dog and found that it contained suspected ecstasy pills. The officers contacted the dog’s owners and informed them that their dog may have ingested illegal drugs.
Ferrell was arrested and charged with possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance, abandonment of dangerous drugs or controlled substances, and giving false information to an law enforcement officer. He was booked into the Coffee County Jail and released on bond.
