If a trend continues long enough, it becomes a habit. Have the CCA Patriots reached that level yet when it comes to 50+ point games? Maybe not but it’s certainly been fun watching the Patriot offense firing on all cylinders of late. Two weeks ago, they scored a program-record 61. Last week, they put up 52. And this week, CCA defeated the John Hancock Academy Rebels 54-6 in Sparta.
By halftime, the Patriots had already put the kind of numbers that would make most teams and players happy for an entire game. They led 30-6 and two Patriots — quarterback Sam Ables and ATH Tyson Crosby – had over 100 yards rushing and two touchdowns apiece.
In the second half, it just got worse and for the third consecutive week, CCA enjoyed a running clock.
In the first period, Crosby broke a 35-yard run for the Patriots’ first score. Bo Roberts made the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead. Crosby broke another touchdown, this one for 90 yards (two-point conversion by Roberts again) for a 16-0 lead. The third score of the quarter came on a 65-yard run by Ables. The two-point attempt was no good. The Patriots had what was becoming a very comfortable 22-0 lead.
Ables scored his second touchdown of the game in the second quarter on a 35-yard run. Beckett Waldron added the two-points for a 30-6 lead at the half.
In the second half, CCA added to their lead on touchdowns from Crosby (65-yard pass from Ables; two-point by Jonah Hall), Ables (eight-yard run; he also made the two-point attempt), and Connor Reckley (Brayden Tanner forced a fumble, Reckley picked it up and ran 65 yards for a score; two points by Crosby).
The Patriots are 6-1 on the season and 3-1 against region opponents. They are off next week then they wrap the season with games against Vidalia Heritage (October 16 at Patriot Field) and Westwood (October 23 in Macon).
CCA is currently third in the GIAA 8-Man standings. David Emanuel, which handed the Patriots their only loss (20-14) back on August 21, is #1 followed by Holy Spirit Prep at #2.
