It was a tale of two halves tonight between the Coffee Trojans and the Effingham County Rebels in Springfield, Ga. During the first half, the two teams looked evenly matched and headed for a barn-burner. In the second half, however, the Trojans took control and outscored the Rebels 34-7 to cruise to their second region win 58-26. “We played a lot better in the second half. We were very flat in the first half. We had to regroup and do better. Our defense played well in the last two quarters,” said Coffee head coach Robby Pruitt following the game. “I…

Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006. It’s a day I think about often. Too often, in fact. It was a day that shook our community to its core, and its effects are still being felt. It’s a cliché, but the day started like any other. My younger son, Zean, was just over two months old. Heather was still at home with him. I woke up and took our older son, Montgomery, to preschool at First Baptist Church just like I always did. I headed into town, going east on 158. At the bypass, I turned left and crossed the overpass. It was…

It wasn’t the officials, though there were two questionable intentional grounding calls – one on Coffee’s next-to-last play of the game that unfortunately put the officiating crew front and center in a close and hard-fought game. It wasn’t the play calling, though Coffee Trojans’ head coach Robby Pruitt admitted after the game that he should have selected different plays down the stretch. Neither of those factors were the reason why the Trojans suffered their first loss of the year to the Ware County Gators 24-21 at Memorial Stadium in Waycross. Instead it was turnovers; the Trojans turned the ball over…

Wednesday evening, I listened to President Barack Obama’s address to the nation regarding the recent developments in the Middle East. I have a few thoughts about the speech that I would like to share. First, however, I believe I need to be up front about a few things. First of all, I did not support Obama in either of his bids for the presidency. I do, however, respect the office of president and I respect the man who sits in that position, regardless of how I feel about him or his policies. With that said, every time I see or…

From now on, organizations that use city facilities will pay a fee of some kind, regardless of for-profit or not-for-profit status. In the past, non-profit organizations wishing to use city facilities had often asked the city commission to waive any fees associated with using facilities for their events. In most cases, the commission agreed to waive the fees. At the last meeting, however, commissioners decided to re-visit the issue. At Monday night’s city commission meeting, commissioners unanimously voted to administer a refundable deposit fee of $100 or $200, depending on the facility in question, and a non-refundable set up/rehearsal fee…
