A Douglas woman spent her New Year’s Day behind bars after authorities say she struck a 45-year-old man during a domestic altercation. Douglas police responded to 708 S. Manilla Ave. just after 6 p.m. last Thursday in reference to a domestic disturbance in progress. Following a brief investigation, it was determined that the offender, 37-year-old Miashante N. Donaldson, had hit the victim in the face while the two were arguing. Donadlson was subsequently arrested and charged with one count of simple battery under the Family Violence Act.
Police say a 27-year-old Douglas man was hospitalized last week following a shooting that occurred off Cecil Way. Authorities were dispatched to the area of 606 Cecil Way last Monday just before 1 p.m. in reference to shots being fired in the area and an unknown person walking around with a firearm. While en route to the call, officers received another call saying that someone had just entered Coffee Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound. Dr. Julian Anderson Williams, a long-time educator whose lengthy and distinguished career with the Coffee County School System included serving as acting superintendent, has passed away. He died at his home in Douglas on December 29, 2014. Julian was born in Douglas on June 13, 1940 to J.D. and Mattie Anderson Williams. He grew up in Jacksonville, Georgia, the oldest grandson of Mary and Walter Anderson and Effie and Dave Williams. Former Waycross Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Michael Boggs won’t be sitting on the federal bench, following President Barack Obama’s announcement to senators he won’t renominate Boggs to be a federal judge in Georgia. Officials with the White House confirmed early Wednesday that Boggs will not be renominated. A 58-year-old Douglas man found himself in behind bars over the weekend after telling authorities he had been attending Christmas parties when they stopped him for weaving over the roadway. Officers stopped Johnny Lee Fuller around 3:30 p.m. Saturday after receiving a report of a vehicle driving erratically in the area of Ga. Hwy. 32 W. Authorities spotted the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop for failure to maintain lane in front of Coffee Regional Medical Center. A Douglas man was arrested and jailed last week after officials say he discharged a firearm during a heated domestic incident. Officers were dispatched to E. Gordn St. in reference to a report of gunshots in the area last Monday just after midnight. Before officers arrived on scene, they received another report of two individuals engaged in an argument at 228 E. Gordon, and that a male subject had fired a weapon. Two Douglas residents were arrested Saturday afternoon following a brutal domestic fight involving a knife. Douglas police responded to 509 S. College Ave. just before 4 p.m. Saturday after receiving a 911 hang-up call. While officers were en route to the scene, they were advised by 911 operators the call was now a domestic problem in progress and that one offender possessed a weapon. According to a report from the City of Douglas Police Department, another pizza delivery driver fell victim to armed robbers last week. Police responded to Hungry Howie’s Pizza, 618 N. Peterson Ave., last Tuesday at around 11: 30 p.m. in reference to an armed robbery that had just occurred. The vicitm, a 20-year-old delivery driver, told authorities that, while he was out on a delivery, someone approached him while he was in his vehicle and asked about the price of the pizza. Abby Cuneo (Blackshear, Ga.), a freshman soccer player for the South Georgia State College Lady Hawks, has been named Honorable Mention All-America following SGSC’s second place finish in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. As a freshman during the fall 2014 season, Cuneo helped her team to 10 wins, with only five losses and one tie. The Lady Hawks reached the semifinals, then advanced to the semifinals where they lost to Darton State College.
