The South Georgia State College Hawks punched their ticket to the GCAA semifinals Tuesday night with an 84-69 win over the South Georgia Tech Jets. Carlos Hart led all scorers with 28 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Kyric Davis had 10 points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots. Justin Edmondson also finished with 10 points, grabbed five rebounds, and had four assists. SGSC shot 53.8 percent from the field in the first half but only made one three-pointer and shot 50 percent from the free throw line. There were two ties…

The preservation of historic areas and properties provide for local recognition and protection of a city’s unique character. In December 2022, the Douglas Historic Preservation Commission submitted a report to the Douglas Mayor and City Commission recommending the north area of Gaskin Avenue be adopted as a local historic district. The City of Douglas adopted an ordinance designating the Gaskin Avenue Local Historic District on Tuesday, January 24, 2023. Owners and residents within the district should have received a notification letter of the designated Gaskin Avenue Local Historic District. The boundaries of the district and a property owner…

On Wednesday, February 7, 2023, a panel from the Georgia Court of Appeals traveled to Coffee County for its first off-site oral arguments of the year. Arguments were held at Coffee High School. To prepare for the visit staff from the Court of Appeals and the Coffee County Courthouse toured Coffee High School’s Clayton W. Mathis Performing Arts Center. The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Nicholls. The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI conduct an independent investigation on March 6, 2023. Roy Streat, 78, was shot and killed. No officers were injured in this incident. Preliminary information indicates that the Nicholls Police Department was notified that a man pointed a gun at a city employee and was walking down the road with the gun. Nicholls Police Department responded and found Streat with a gun at the intersection of Johnson Street and Brunswick Avenue. Streat refused to put down the gun. The officer unsuccessfully…

The City of Douglas has been studying the viability of its government access channel, WDTV-13. Research using local trends with how the public receives media information shows that approximately 589 citizens in the City of Douglas have subscriptions to Vyve Broadband and have the ability to view Channel 13. Based upon the FCC statistics, only an estimated 10% of those subscribers view Channel 13. On Monday, February 13, 2023,the City of Douglas Mayor and Board of Commissioners voted to relinquish rights to operate the PEG channel, WDTV-13 and return the Channel to VYVE.
