Mr. Robert L. “Buddy” Tanner, age 90, of Pearson, passed away Monday, June 3, 2019 at his home in Pearson following an extended illness. Survivors include:Wife Catherine Carter Tanner of Pearson; nephew Steven C. Tanner of Clearwater, Fla.; nieces Stephanie Jernigan of Titus, Ala., Dorothy Heathman of Seattle, Wash., and Katherine Bannebell of Seattle, Wash. Several other relatives also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Tanner will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at Elbethel Church with Sister Barbara Wall officiating. The interment will follow in Sweetwater Cemetery. Relihan Funeral Home in Pearson is in charge of all the arrangements.
Fire, police departments urge water safety The weather is hot, and the City of Douglas Fire Department and Police Department want to urge citizens to practice water safety. Swimming is a popular summer activity and drowning can happen quickly and suddenly. “Any source of water is a drowning hazard, especially for young children and weak swimmers,” says Fire Chief Larry Wilson. “We urge all citizens to be watchful around water and if there is an emergency, please call 911 immediately.” Citizens should understand the risks of water activities. City re-issues RFP for Martin Centre The City of Douglas has re-issued its RFP for the purchase of the Martin Centre. The city wishes for individuals or businesses that would like to purchase the historic Martin Centre to submit their bids so that the foundation that has been laid for quality theatre and cultural performances downtown may continue. Participants included Ashton Ates, Jeremiah Brantley, Amelia Crockett, Terryanna Harris, Justin Strickland, Sariah Wells, and AmeriCorps Member and chaperon Chalanda Woods. Terry Lee Mitchell, age 70, of Douglas, passed away on Sunday June 2, 2019 at Coffee Regional Medical Center. Mr. Mitchell was born on January 6, 1949 in Tampa, Florida, the son of the late Mildred Burtram. He worked as a telephone electrician with South Dade Communications and was a veteran of the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Survivors include his wife, Denise Lynn Goyette of Douglas; son, Kenneth B. Mitchell and wife Brandy of Cape Coral, Fla.; two daughters, Kristina A. Elias B. Lott, age 94, of Douglas, passed away on Tuesday June 4, 2019 at Bacon County Hospital in Alma. Mr. Lott was born on February 16, 1925 in Douglas, the son of the late James Monroe Lott and Ruth Barnes Lott. He worked as a salesman for Lott Builders for twenty-eight years and with the USDA as a crop adjuster. Mr. Lott was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II and a member of West Green United Methodist Church. Mr. Lott was preceded in death by a sister, Francis Smith. Mr. William Henry “Bill” Burkhalter, age 73, of Fitzgerald, formerly of Douglas passed away Monday afternoon June 3, 2019 at Lifecare Center in Fitzgerald following an extended illness. Mr. Burkhalter was born November 18, 1945 to the late Brunner Burkhalter and the late Essie Davis Burkhalter. Other than his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters: Melba Henderson and Myrtle Johnson.Mr. Burkhalter, a native of Blackshear, was self-employed in the landscaping business. On Tuesday, May 21, 2019, the Coffee County Drug Unit conducted a traffic stop on Walker Street after observing the driver of a black Mazda car had failed to maintain lane and made an improper turn. During a vehicle search, officers discovered a quantity of methamphetamine as well as a digital scale and other drug related objects. The driver, John Allen Daniels, was charged with driving while license suspended or revoked, no insurance, possession of drug related objects and possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. Daniels was booked into the Coffee County Jail.
