Marco Ayulo, M.D. of Oncology Hematology Care Center in Waycross recently made a contribution on behalf of his practice to the James M. Dye Foundation to support the faculty, staff and students on South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) Waycross Campus. Foundation Executive Director Taylor Hereford accepted the contribution and thanked Ayulo for his support. The Dye Foundation supports various initiatives on SGSC’s Waycross Campus, including student scholarships and grants, which are not funded by the State of Georgia. Hannah Elizabeth Higginson (second from right) of Pierce County has been named the first recipient of the Exchange Club of Waycross Scholarship. Higginson is a 2017 homeschool graduate and has chosen business management as her program of study at South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) Waycross Campus. For the 14th year, Hometown Harvest will take place this week on Thursday from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on the vacant lot adjacent to City Hall located on Madison Avenue. Friday afternoon, October 20, the Alma Police Department arrested Shamaria Bacon, 25 of Savannah, for financial transaction card fraud. On January 09, 2017, Bacon found and used the lost debit card of another to make a purchase at Papa T’s in Alma. Bacon had been arrested by law enforcement in Chatham County on an unrelated matter and held for APD
Friday morning, October 20, 2017, the Alma Police Department assisted the Georgia State Patrol with a traffic stop on U.S. 1 @ the northern city limits. A trooper with GSP stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation which led to the arrest of the driver for DUI. During the traffic stop, a passenger in the vehicle was found to have a large quantity of syringes and spoons containing what the passenger stated was methamphetamine mixed with another controlled substance. Today, Wallace Lee was found guilty of the murder of Meghan Bowen and Carlos Harden that occurred sometime between November 18th and 19th, 2015. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney John Rumker and Judge Andy Spivey presided over the proceedings. The evidence presented at trial showed a history of violent acts Lee committed against Bowen, including: beating in her front door with an ax, smashing the windows of her vehicle, physically attacking her, and threats that he ‘better not catch’ her with someone else. As the traditional Halloween day quickly approaches, on Tuesday, October 31st, the City of Douglas Police Department urges parents and neighborhoods to use safety cautions for personal safety and especially for kids. The City asks that Trick-Or-Treating take place between the hours of 6– 9 p.m. In order to minimize traffic in the Golf Club neighborhood, traffic will flow one-way on October 31, during trick or treating hours.
