On June 16, the Alma Police Department’s Crime Suppression Unit arrested Diana Rene Entrekin, 46 of Alma, for possession of methamphetamine. Entrekin’s arrest resulted from a traffic stop for a minor traffic offense.

Monday didn’t get off to a very good start for a train moving through Douglas. On Monday morning, a CSX train car derailed near Griffin’s Warehouse in Douglas along the crossing at Pearl Avenue. Crossings will be blocked from Pearl Avenue to Gaskin Avenue. Motorists are asked to see alternative routes until the derailed car has been removed from the tracks. The estimated time the crossings will be closed is from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. At the time of this press release, CSX has not released an official statement as to the cause of the derailment.

Valeria Plymale, age 93, of Douglas, Ga. passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at her residence following an extended illness. Mr. Frazier Nathaniel Porter, age 83, of West Green passed away Tuesday afternoon, June 13, 2017, at Memorial Health University Medical Center, in Savannah, following a brief illness. He was born March 17, 1934 to the late Andrew Jackson ‘A. J.’ Porter and the late Mary Devera Tomlinson Porter. The City of Douglas has had a curfew ordinance in effect for many years but many young people and their parents/guardians are not familiar with these laws. “It is the desire of the City of Douglas to remind some, while educating others, the hours that young people, under the age of 18 can legally be in a public place without being under the supervision of a parent or guardian”, says City Manager, Terrell Jacobs. A portion of South Gaskin Avenue is scheduled to close to through traffic June 12 for construction of a culvert, which is necessary due to the widening of the perimeter road (U.S. 221/SR 135). Drivers will not be able to access Gaskin Avenue from the perimeter road/Bowens Mill Road. Traffic will detour to Old Axson Road and then to Pine Street. Local traffic can access Gaskin from Pine Street, but no through traffic will be allowed. The contractor is permitted to close the road for 90 days. On June 13, the Alma Police Department arrested Christopher Dinning, 33 of Alma, and Tessa McNabb, 44 of Alma, for theft by receiving stolen property.
