Lee Taylor was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. Lee gave a presentation about the local Boys and Girls Club to include recent events and the new Roundtree Teen Center. The Kiwanis Club members enjoyed and appreciated his talk. Also on Tuesday, JoAnne Lewis was presented with the Dr. Lewis Davis Award. This award recognizes individuals for their dedication and outstanding service to the community. West Green Elementary School hosted a Super Science Night on Oct 24. Students came dressed in their favorite costumes for an engaging night of science experiments. Many different experiments were set up in the gym for students to enjoy as they learned more about the fun of science. Students participated in experiments such as rolling a can with static electricity, making slime, constructing straw rockets and building fizz-inflators. They also created blobs in bottles, fantastic foamy mountains, and bouncing bubbles. George Washington Carver Freshman Campus (GWCFC) had a week dedicated to showing their school spirit, otherwise known as Spirit Week. Throughout the week, students were encouraged to dress up, have fun, and get hyped in honor of the homecoming game that Friday. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) hosted the 2016 Child Death Investigation Training Symposium Tuesday at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth, Georgia. GBI Director Vernon Keenan provided opening remarks for the symposium. Subject matter experts in the field provided instruction in the area of legal trends, sexual exploitation, child neglect, Georgia’s Child Abuse Protocol, and investigative techniques. The GBI is committed to the investigation of child fatalities occurring in the state of Georgia in an effort to prevent such tragedies. Mrs. Eleanor “Doodle” Hattaway Joiner, age 80, of Nicholls passed away late Monday evening, October 24, 2016, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. She was born December 2, 1935 to the late Harvell Hattaway and the late Lizzie Hart Hattaway. Mrs. Joiner was preceded in death by her husband, Spencer Joiner; a daughter, Peggy Johnson; a sister, Orbin Harden; a brother, Edward Hattaway; a grandchild, Jeffrey Taylor and a special brother-in-law, E. Westside Elementary PTO’s Annual Fall Ball for students in grades 3-5 was absolutely fantastic! Westside students in 3rd grade through 5th grade were treated to a night of Fall fun filled with games, concessions, dancing, photo opportunities, and frolicking! Students in attendance of the Fall Ball played bingo for super prizes and enjoyed the bouncy house. Satilla Elementary School’s students and staff had a blast bringing National School Lunch Week festivities to a close on Wednesday, October 12, 2016. This year’s theme was, “School Lunch: Show Your School Spirit.” Mrs. Celeste Williams and her nutrition staff hosted a tailgating party at Satilla. No tailgating party would be complete without hot dogs, hamburgers, football players, and cheerleaders! Shirley Marie Carver, age 86, of Douglas, GA passed away on Friday, October 21, 2016, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Mrs. Carver was born on March 8, 1930, in Niagara Falls, NY to the late Peter Hochadel and Ruth Ferrel Hochadel. Parent/Teacher Conference Day was held last week, and the Coffee Middle School 8th grade had 100% parental contacts. The Douglas-Coffee County Public Library held a Children’s Halloween Party Saturday, October 22, 2016. Children had the option to dress up in costume. There were various games including a mummy wrap competition, pin the spider on the web, bug/spider toss arts and crafts making ghosts, spiders, puppets, and more! A special interactive Halloween story time was held as well. Children received a small prize for each game in which they participated.
