Debbie Ann Purcell, age 46, of Glennville, Ga. passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2016, at her residence following an extended illness. Mrs. Purcell was born on November 4, 1969, in Lakewood, Fla. to Jeffie Ann Corbitt Reliford Courson and the late William Monroe Reliford. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No…it’s Westside Superhero Readers! Students at Westside Elementary School are using their super reading powers to read, read, read. Each grade level is working to accumulate a set number of “words read” by the end of the year in order to reach the school-wide goal of 25,000,000 words! Westside Elementary staff was treated to a delicious meal from The Olive Garden provided by The Howard Center for Women on Tuesday, November 1. Each staff member not only enjoyed the catered meal, but walked away with a burlap tote bag, a t-shirt, and entered his/her name for a drawing for a Michael Kors bag. Pre-K classes at Indian Creek Elementary have been learning about community helpers. On Thursday, October 20, the firemen from the City of Douglas visited to teach the students about fire safety. On Oct. 28, the EMTS from Coffee Regional Medical Center visited to teach us about their jobs. They demonstrated how they help people that are sick or hurt. Three players scored 20 or more points, and three school records were broken Wednesday night as the Hawks (1-0) dominated the Martinique National Team in Douglas, 148-29.
