Eastside Elementary Pre-K students recently enjoyed a special treat when they got to visit Kindergarten classes for the morning. Every Pre-K student got to go into the Kindergarten classrooms, meet the Kindergarten teachers and students, and explore in the five Kindergarten classrooms. It was an exciting experience to visit in Kindergarten, as the many Pre-K students have worked hard to prepare for promoting up to Kindergarten in the school term 2016-2017. Mrs. Wildes’ gifted/honors students at Coffee Middle School met Friday morning, May 6, to Skype with Eliot Schrefer, author of Endangered. According to Wikipedia, Schrefer is an American author of both adult and young adult fiction, and a two-time finalist for the National Book Award in Young People’s Literature. He is most known for his young adult novels Endangered (2012) and Threatened (2014), which are survival stories featuring young people and great apes. He is currently on the faculty of the Creative Writing MFA Program at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Clinton Harrell Walls, age 81, of Wray, GA passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2016, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Walls was born on January 27, 1935, in Douglas, GA to the late William Alvin Walls and Mamie Adams Walls. Students from Indian Creek Elementary School, led by Ken Erickson, competed in the Noetic Learning Math Contest last month. Noetic Learning Math Contest is a national elementary math problem solving contest held twice a year. More than 30,000 young mathletes representing over 700 schools across the country participated in this year’s spring contest. The following students received National Honorable Mention. Students in the pediatric nursing class at South Georgia State College (SGSC) recently showed their support for three-year-old cancer patient Harris Lott by purchasing and wearing lime green “Go Harris Go” t-shirts. Lisa Batten, assistant professor of nursing, said the idea was developed while the class was reviewing and studying childhood cancer. Lott is the son of Drs. McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Lott. Congratulations to three Coffee Middle School students who auditioned once in December and passed to the second round audition to recently score in the top of their instrument to perform with a band made up of all of the schools south of Perry, GA. These high-performing musicians are Isai Artiga on trumpet, Jesse Ragan on euphonium, and Gracee Myers on oboe.
