Five Coffee County Junior 4-H members, along with volunteer leader Chalanda Woods, traveled to the Wahsega 4-H Center near Dahlonega, GA, the week of July 4-10 to participate in the Georgia 4-H Wilderness Challenge Camp. This camp facility is out in the woods about 15 miles from Dahlonega. On their arrival day, they went in to Dahlonega to see the Independence Day fireworks show. First Academy is adding sixth grade for the 2016-17 school year with plans to expand the middle school and eventually add a high school. All registration for the 2016-17 school year is online at www.fbcdouglas.com/first-academy. First Academy is registering preschool, elementary and sixth grade. Some classes have filled with waiting lists, but there are still openings in several grades and classes. First Academy is fully accredited with quality by the Georgia Accrediting Commission with a curriculum that aligns with Georgia’s standards. The Douglas Stingrays won their 13th consecutive District II GRPA swim championship last week. The Rays amassed a total of 1,043 points to the distant second place of 390 points for Wayne County. Appling was third with 377 points, while Jeff Davis had 274 points. The Stingrays qualified 68 swimmers for the state meet in Tifton, with 54 of those individuals qualifying in both of their events. The team dominated the relays by winning 28 out of 30 of the four-person races. Satilla Regional Library System welcomed Mr. Al Poindexter, folk singer, to the Douglas-Coffee County and Pearson Public Libraries on Wednesday. Mr. Al held an interactive folk singing program for children and families. There were many songs performed including Who Is Your Hero?, Hollow Tree, and This Land is Your Land where there was audience participation. He discussed music history related with the various instruments he brought that included the banjo, guitar, and more. He taught new vocabulary words as well. Everyone had a great time! Martha B. Evans, age 88, of Douglas, GA passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at Manor House following an extended illness. Mrs. Evans was born on December 3, 1927, in Douglas, GA to the late Ralph Waldo Griffin and Mamie Eliza Baird Griffin. Survivors include: her two sons, Rowan B.
