Each year, the Coffee County School System participates in the Young Author’s Writing Competition. Schools submit winners for each grade level, and the overall winners are chosen for the school district. This year, two of those overall winners were from Indian Creek Elementary School. Abbie Hill, in Mrs. Tammy Bennett’s class, wrote the winning piece for first grade entitled, “The Dream.” Georgia Hamlin, in Mrs. Peggy Luke’s class, composed the winning entry for fourth grade entitled “Long Wait.” Congratulations to both of these students and their teachers for their hard work. The COMPASS test will be given at 8:30 a.m. in the 8th grade computer lab on Thursday, April 28 for 8th grade students who will be applying to Wiregrass College to take college classes during 9th grade or those who have applied to the Career Academy for 9th grade. Students must sign up with Mrs. Pruitt, and the limit is 25. There is no cost or picture ID required. Merchants in downtown Douglas will host a Shop Local Spring Open House in conjunction with Georgia Cities Week activities. Main Street merchants will have bargains, special clearances, and sidewalk sales on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23, 2016 from 10 a.m to 6 p.m. “We are excited about the Shop Local Spring Open House,” says Pattie Merritt, Main Street Coordinator. “We have a 98% occupancy rate in the Main Street district, and most of these businesses are owned by local people who are our neighbors and friends.
