Congratulations to Yermison Carrillo, who is West Green Elementary’s iPod winner for having perfect attendance for the second nine weeks. Mrs. Hannah’s Pre-K class at West Green also recentlyl read Not a Box by Antoinette Portis. In the story, a bunny imagines that his box is other things such as a space ship, a mountain, a race car, and a hot air balloon. The students were encouraged to make a box into something and share it with the class. They did an amazing job! – Submitted

Emma Johnson, Glynn Academy Key Club President and Georgia Key Club District Project Chair, was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting Tuesday, Jan. 19, at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. Emma spoke about her longtime connection with Kiwanis thru her parents and grandparents, and she also explained what Key Clubs do and how they are found in many countries worldwide. Nothing can compare to a mother’s love and, on January 19, some of our very own Coffee Middle School Trojans honored that statement. Sedrick Williams and Adrian Wilkerson honored their mothers at their last home game for their mothers’ fight and determination. Sedrick Williams’s mother, Moneriah Sams, has ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. There is currently no cure and, Sedrick says he is “balling for a cure” because one day he would like a cure to be found in honor of his mom. Eastside Elementary School held an amazing Reading Detective Family Night on Thursday, January 14. Hundreds of Eagles and family members were present for an evening of mysteries and intrigue. Students became official Reading Detectives after participating in each of the events. A good time was had by all that attended! Douglas and Coffee County officials were in Atlanta on January 13 for the Annual Okefenokee Occasion. At this annual event, local leaders from 18 counties of the Southern Georgia Regional Commission are given the opportunity to talk with legislators one-on-one about needs in our community. The purpose of the event is to ensure state leaders are aware of the needs in this region and that they keep these needs in mind when making decisions that impact communities in the region. – Submitted

Satilla Regional Library held its Teen Advisory Kick-Off Party on Saturday, January 16, from 12 to 2 p.m. in the large meeting room at the Douglas/Coffee County Public Library. To start off the party, “The Name Game” was played to get to know everyone’s names. Everyone wrote their names on an index card and had it taped to their back.
