Satilla Riverkeeper is hosting a free Adopt-A-Stream Water Quality Monitoring Workshop conducted by Georgia Adopt-A-Stream and certified Chemical QA/QC trainers. The event will be at South Georgia State College, Douglas Campus, on Friday, June 5, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to earn a QA/QC certification after a classroom session and a field methods session. This program is highly recommended for students who are interested in protecting their local waterways and becoming citizen scientists. This Friday, May 15, Coffee Middle School will host “Be Fit Be Cool,” as part of a Childhood Obesity Awareness Campaign and is presented by the American Association of Physicians of India (AAPI) in association with Houston Healthcare. It will be a day full of fun and activities including a poster contest, a motivational speaker, Zumba, a Walk-a-Thon, t-shirt giveaways, and door prizes. The Coffee County School Nutrition Program, along with the City of Douglas and several community partners, will be participating in the USDA Seamless Summer Option Program to provide meals for children again this summer. The program will begin operating June 1 and will run through July 9. Registration for the 2015-16 school year is ongoing at First Academy for one-year-olds through sixth grade. Some classes have filled with waiting lists, but there are still openings in most classes.
