Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 3, Douglas Mayor James Dennis signed a proclamation designating Thursday, the 12th of February, as Kiwanis International Day, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis International. A number of members of the Douglas Kiwanis Club were on hand for the signing. In other Kiwanis news, Doug Wasden, First Academy Headmaster, was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. On Friday, January 30, Mary Spurlin (a.k.a. the “Statue of Liberty”) with Liberty Tax Service visited Mrs. Katherine Gaskins’ and Mrs. Andrea Thompson’s kindergarten class at Westside Elementary School. The students listened to interesting facts Ms. Spurlin presented on the Statue of Liberty. Each student was given a crown and a coloring sheet! Daniel Peace’s two free throws in the closing seconds of regulation helped propel the No. 10 South Georgia State College Hawks to a 70-67 win Monday night over the Albany Tech Titans. “Tonight was a tale of two halves,” said head coach Cory Baldwin. “The first half was probably one of our best so far this season. Coffee County Sheriff Doyle Wooten would like to reach out to the public and offer some advice on buying from Craigslist after the horrific situation involving the Runions who were killed during a Craigslist meet to buy a vehicle in Telfair County. Sheriff Wooten states it is not a good idea to meet in private locations. “We would like to make sure these deadly interactions do not happen again,” he says. It’s been two years since the tragic death of Edith Sheffield. Although she no longer walks among us, her kind spirit continues to touch those who knew her and even some who did not. That was true when the staff at First National Bank headed up a gift giving campaign in memory of Edith. Family and friends of Edith graciously donated a large flat screen television and a Wal-Mart gift card to Still Waters women’s substance abuse and recovery center. Contractors have been busy this week in Douglas as several local entrepreneurs break ground at Peanut Partners, LLC, a new peanut buying point located on the Sinkhole Road just inside the city limits. The facility will buy peanuts for members at Tifton Quality Peanuts, LLC as well as for outside farmers. Peanuts will be received, weighed, cleaned, dried, inspected, graded and stored at the buying point, which will feature a 10,000 ton storage facility.
