West Green Elementary School would like to congratulate Mrs. Beth Kirkland’s and Mrs. Dominique Carver’s homerooms for collecting the most box tops for the month of September. Way to go, West Green Warriors!

West Green Elementary School is proud to recognize the students who were the TRIBE Kids for the month of September. These students demonstrated the character trait of pride and were rewarded with a certificate and a t-shirt. Thanks to a grant by the United States Department of Agriculture, the Satilla Regional Library in Douglas now has a new wireless computer classroom. Beginning computer classes will be offered on the following dates: 10/31 at 1 p.m. – Computer Basics11/7 at 1 p.m. – Internet Basics11/14 at 1 p.m. – Email Basics Class size is limited to 10 and spaces are on a first come, first serve basis. Veterans Day plans have been announced for the campuses of Wiregrass Georgia Technical College. The Wiregrass Student Veterans Associations (SVA) will be hosting these events on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 to honor student, staff, and faculty veterans as well as all veterans in our communities. The Valdosta campus ceremony honoring veterans will be held by the fountain at Lowndes Hall at 8:30 a.m. followed by a breakfast in the Upper Crust. The Douglas Fire Department recently attended training for the Region 8 Haz-Mat Team. Chris Pappas with Sigma Counseling taught an eight hour class that will help the Douglas Fire Department keep their Haz-Mat Technician Certification up to date. -Submitted by the City of Douglas

Wiregrass Georgia Technical College will offer Bright from the Start child care classes on November 8, 2014, on the Coffee Campus. Topics for the class include preschool social studies concepts, 1, 2, 3 There’s a Bug in the Tree, Preschool Math/Science Concepts, and importance of art. Class will be held Saturday, November 8, 2014, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Childcare providers will receive six hours of continuing education credit. The annual Hometown Harvest will take place on Thursday, October 30, from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the vacant lot adjacent to city hall, which is located on Madison Avenue. The kids play area will be from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with candy distribution taking place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Registration for the kids costume contest will begin at 4 p.m. and end promptly at 5:30 p.m. The costume contest will begin at 6:15 p.m., with winners being announced at 7:30 p.m. The age limit for those participating in trick-or-treating and costume contest is 12 years…

Westside administrators, faculty, staff, and students joined the community to show their support for former Westside Teacher Lisa Chriqui, who lost her battle with cancer, and others affected by this disease on October 23 by dressing as “pink as possible.” Ms. Chriqui will always have a special place in the hearts of all Wildcats and “thinking pink” certainly brought back fond memories for those she touched at Westside. -Submitted by Westside Elementary School

The Douglas Fire Department participated in the 2014 Safety and Wellness Festival and promoted Fire Safety Week, October 5 – 11. Fire department personnel visited several preschools during Fire Prevention Week and spoke to the preschoolers about fire safety and the importance of working smoke alarms.Additionally, an art contest was held, and the winners from Westside Elementary School and their classmates are pictured below.
