The City of Douglas has two vacancies on the Downtown Development Authority. There are two upcoming appointments to the Downtown Development Authority. Anyone desiring to serve on the DDA must meet the stipulations listed below. The City of Douglas and Transwaste are offering a Junk Drop-Off Day in January to help citizens get rid of excess trash. The date will be Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the 9th Grade Academy located on the corner of Pine Street and Gaskin Avenue from 8 a.m. -12 p.m. On Community Junk Drop-Off Days, a dumpster will be placed in a different neighborhood to offer residents a way to dispose of large, non-hazardous items and electronic items at no cost. Mr. Benny Lindsey Whittington, age 65, of Douglas passed away early Saturday morning, January 10, 2015, at the Mayo Clinic, in Jacksonville, Florida, following a short illness. He was born October 15, 1949 to the late Benny Cornelius Whittington and the late Hazel Louise Ross Whittington. Mr. Whittington, a native of Hartford, Alabama, was a Truck Driver for Wal-Mart for 25 years. He had been living in the Coffee County area for several years. The City of Douglas wishes to alert utility customers of a reported telephone scam where the caller asks for an immediate payment through a Green Dot type account or utilities will be disconnected. City Manager Terrell Jacobs releases the following statement: “Although the City of Douglas does not directly call customers to collect payment, we do contract with a third party company in an attempt to collect bad debt. Transwaste and the City of Douglas has pulled the recycling dumpster from the drop center located at the City of Douglas Public Works Department.
