On September 8, author and storyteller Carmen Agra Deedy visited West Green Elementary. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade, as well as their teachers, were mesmerized as Mrs. Deedy told them stories based on her life experiences and talked to them about how she gets her ideas for her books. Mrs. Deedy made many of the stories interactive with the children doing motions to act out the story. Mrs. Deedy also included sound effects as she told her stories, which enthralled the children. Everyone had a wonderful time and is looking forward to having Mrs. Deedy return in the future.…
Glynis Ann Rewis, age 48 of Douglas, passed away early Saturday morning, September 13, 2014, at her residence, following an extended illness. She was born May 1, 1966, to Gilford Dyal and Sandra Goinous Dyal. Survivors include her mother, Sandra G. Overstreet of Douglas; four sisters, Teresa Taylor of Perry, Florida, Kim Holland of Jesup, Denise Gaskins and Gina Jordan, both of Douglas; several nieces, nephews, friends, and other relatives. Memorial services will follow at a later date. Ricketson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

The Douglas Rotary and Exchange Clubs held a joint meeting on Thursday and welcomed guest speaker Mr. Brian Owens, Commissioner of the Georigia Department of Corrections. Mr. Owens discussed the decline in prison population as a result of state efforts to rehabilitate those incarcerated for drug convictions and other non-violent crimes. Commissioner Owens explained that the state is constantly working to improve job options for felons. He said that the State of Georgia is taking steps to better prepare and socialize incarcerated convicts in an effort to help them not only find jobs but, most importantly, keep those jobs once…
