James Edward Johnson, 43, of Douglas, remains in jail after he alleged attempted to pay for items at a local Dollar General with a fake $20 bill.
The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on December 15, 2025. A deputy responded to the Dollar General on Highway 221 North in reference to a subject trying to pay for several items with a counterfeit $20 bill. The cashier told the individual, identified as Johnson, that the money was fake and he immediately left the store.
The cashier had the tag number of the vehicle in which Johnson left. The officer went to the home listed on the vehicle’s registration and spoke to a woman who said she had given Johnson a ride to the store then dropped him off at a Second Avenue South address. The officer went to that address but was unable to find Johnson.
He was located and arrested on December 19, 2025, and booked into the Coffee County Jail around 11:30 a.m. Johnson was charged with theft by deception and he had an active probation warrant. He is still in jail.
