Following an incident Tuesday that created a major gas leak just west of the city limits, officials are reminding locals to dial 811 before digging on their property.

The City of Douglas issued the following press release late Tuesday afternoon:

“On Tuesday, October 13, 2015, the Coffee County Fire Department, along with several City of Douglas Gas Department officials, responded to a gas line rupture on Georgia Highway 32 near Sinkhole Road.

A residential gas line was hit when a contractor was plowing ground to lay cables that caused a gas pipe to leak. The residential service has been inactive for a period of time and the residence was vacant.

Officials responded quickly, and the broken pipe was sealed within one hour of the notification of the gas leak.  No one needed to be evacuated and the area is safe.

‘As a reminder to the public, please call 811 for a dig request before you dig, even in areas outside of the city limits,’ says City Manager Terrell Jacobs. ‘Whether you are planning on digging yourself or hiring someone to dig for you, call 811 so that underground lines can be located prior to digging.’

For more information, please call 311 or (912) 384-3302.”
