South Georgia State College Head Men’s Basketball Coach Cory Baldwin reached another milestone in his coaching career this past week, while the Hawks split two conference games as the team enters the homestretch of the regular season.

Baldwin earned his 350th career win Wednesday, Feb. 8 when SGSC (19-5, 8-2 GCAA) defeated South Georgia Tech 87-76 in overtime. Baldwin is in his 14th season at SGSC where he has won 297 games to date. He was hired in 2009 by the former Waycross College when the college started a men’s basketball program. Baldwin has won two GCAA Conference Tournament championships (2011, 2021) and one GCAA regular season title (2015). Baldwin began his career at Truett-McConnell University where he won 53 games in three seasons.

“I am thankful for all of the texts and calls of congratulations. This means a lot to me and (wife) Amanda,” Baldwin said. “This win comes on the backs of so many great, hardworking players, assistant coaches, gameday workers, administrators, volunteers, parents, mentors, and fans who have poured their heart and soul into the teams I have coached. I’m also thankful for all of the great coaches and teams I have been lucky enough to coach against. While getting this win has been special, it’s time to move on to the ‘Next Play,’ which is what I tell the guys all the time.”

The Gordon State Highlanders didn’t let Baldwin and the Hawks celebrate for long. The Highlanders took advantage of a strong three-point shooting performance Saturday afternoon to defeat SGSC 81-77. The Highlanders shot 50 percent (18-for-36) from behind the arc and were led by Chaydon Stone, who made 61.5 percent of his three-point shots (8-for-13).

Carlos Hart led the Hawks with 30 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Zae Wiggins had 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Kyric Davis had 11 points.

SGSC remains in second place in the GCAA standings with six regular season games remaining. The Hawks hosted Central Georgia Tech Saturday, Feb. 18 in Waycross.

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
