Curtis Edward Gurley, 91, passed away peacefully at his home in Millwood on Saturday, February 4, 2023.

 

 

He was born in Atkinson County on February 1, 1932, to the late Clyde Edward Gurley and Fannie Pearson Gurley. He proudly served in the United States Army as Staff Sergeant from 1953 until he retired in 1973. Mr. Gurley loved to be outdoors. On most days, you could find him outside working with flowers, mowing grass, or riding his scooter. Most of all he loved spending time with his family.

 

 

In addition to his parents, Mr. Gurley is preceded in death by his only son, Donald Gurley; one grandson, Bill O’Berry; one granddaughter, Andrea Carver; one great great grandson, Aiden Gillis; four brothers, Jim Gurley, Clyde Gurley, Jr., Lloyd Gurley, Marion Gurley; three sisters, Reba Gurley, Mary Ellen Gurley Wilcox, Francis Gurley May, and son in law, Rondal O’Berry.

 

 

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty Simmons Gurley; four daughters, Brenda (Lee) Mizell of Axson; Linda O’Berry of Millwood; Tina (Perry) Thompson of Millwood; Nelda (Rufus) Douglas of Millwood; 14 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren; two brothers, Clovis Gurley and John Henry Gurley; three sisters, Catherine Gurley Taft, Odessa Gurley Taft, and Callie Gurley Williams; numerous nieces and nephews.

 

 

The family will receive loved ones on Monday, February 6 at Indian Mound Baptist Church in Millwood from 6pm – 8pm. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 7 at 11am at Indian Mound Baptist Church.  Burial will follow at Axson Evangelistic Cemetery in Axson, Ga.

 

 

The family would like to express their gratitude to Mr. Gurley’s caregivers for the excellent care they provided. Kimberly, Sherita, Hannah, Alicia and Lavonne, all from Georgia Hospice Care, Vivian from the VA, and Pam Sewell.
