Michael Bussey, 50, of Douglas, was arrested on October 17, 2024, after he allegedly fired several shots from a handgun at a vehicle with three occupants inside. The three individuals had stopped by Bussey’s residence to see if he and his family needed help cutting down trees, according to an incident report from the sheriff’s office.

The alleged incident happened just after 10 a.m. on October 17 at a residence on Green Willow Road. According to one of the complainants, he and two of his family members were in the vehicle and stopped at the residence. The report says that none of the occupants of the vehicle got out. They asked if Bussey needed help with his trees. Then, the report says, Bussey began yelling at them. He went to another vehicle on the property, retrieved a gun, and fired multiple shots at the vehicle.

The report says that one of the shots went through the rear passenger door and exited through the windshield. The glass from the windshield injured one of the occupants of the vehicle.

When officers went to Bussey’s home, Bussey was there, along with his wife, her daughter, and a child. The report says that when officers pulled up, Bussey began yelling at one of the deputies, who was of Hispanic descent. The report says that Bussey refused to talk to the deputy because the officer was “Mexican.” The report also says that Bussey told the three individuals in the vehicle, all of whom were Hispanic, to leave but he didn’t shoot at them. The report mentions that Bussey said that there have “been a lot of Mexicans coming around asking and begging for a job.”

As the officers continued speaking to the people at the home, they discovered that Bussey’s wife had a handgun in her car. That handgun is the one that officers believe Bussey used in the alleged incident.

Officers also spoke to a neighbor who said he heard several gunshots but he thought someone was shooting up in the air.

Bussey was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated assault. He remains in the Coffee County Jail.
