Thursday morning, deputies responded to a Miller Road address in response to a gunshot wound. The victim, a female, had been transported to Coffee Regional Medical Center via private vehicle with life-threatening injuries.

Officers blocked a portion of Miller Road in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. Sheriff Fred Cole asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to conduct the investigation. Early Thursday evening, the sheriff’s office announced via social media post that the suspect wanted in connection with the incident has been taken into custody. The identity of the suspect has not been released and, at the time of this writing, no one has been booked into the Coffee County Jail on violent crime charges.

The victim did not survive the shooting. WALB has reported that the victim was caught in the crossfire of a shootout between other individuals. Thursday afternoon, sources told DouglasNow that the victim was not the intended target of the shooting. There was a shootout between other parties and she was hit accidentally.

The incident is being investigated as a homicide. The GBI will release more information soon and DouglasNow will update the story as more details are released.
