The South Georgia State College Hawks closed out their regular season home schedule Wednesday night with a 59-50 win over the Albany Tech Titans.

Kyric Davis led the Hawks (19-10, 10-5 GCAA) with a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Davis also had three blocked shots. Lay Davis was the only other player to score in double figures, finishing with 15 points and six rebounds.

Both teams struggled from the field in the first half. Albany Tech opened the game with a three-pointer and never led again during the first 20 minutes. The Titans shot 19 percent from the field, while the Hawks made 35.5 percent of their shots. The result was a 25-16 SGSC lead at halftime.

The Titans outscored the Hawks 13-4 at the start of the second half to tie the game with 14:48 remaining. The game remained close until the 8:21 mark when the Titans took a 40-39 lead. The teams traded baskets over the next 1:21 when the Hawks hit their only three-pointer of the game to take the lead for good at 44-43.

The Hawks shot 43 percent from the field for the game and missed only four free throws (75 percent). SGSC’s three-pointer in the second half was just the fourth made three-pointer by the team in the last four games.

SGSC is tied for third place in the GCAA with one regular season game remaining this Saturday at Gordon State. This keeps the Hawks in the hunt to host a GCAA Tournament quarterfinal game next week. The top four teams at the end of the regular season host a March 12 quarterfinal. The highest remaining seed after the quarterfinal round will host the semifinals and championship game March 15-16.

The tournament’s final seeding and information about quarterfinal games will be released by the GCAA this weekend.
