The South Georgia State College Hawks have won six in a row, most recently taking a double-header from the University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie Indians in Allendale, South Carolina, last Thursday. The Hawks won game one 6-5 then took game two 9-3.

The Indians had a 5-3 lead going into the top of the seventh in game one when the Hawks’ bats came alive, scoring three runs with two outs to take a one-run lead. Luke Boone led off the inning with a single. The next two Hawks were retired then Ware County’s Trey Jeffers tied the game with a two-run home run on a 1-0 pitch. Colton Whaley followed with a double then Kyle Sivers scored Whaley on a single to give the Hawks a 6-5 lead. In the bottom of the frame, one Indian reached base but didn’t score. SGSC slipped away with the one-run win.

The Hawks used five pitchers in the game with Josh Simpson taking the win in 2/3 of an inning of work. Lefty Josh Ryan got the save.

Game two followed a similar script. SGSC carried a one-run lead into the top of the seventh before erupting for five runs to put the game away. Kyle Strickland, Andrew Shadburn, and Shivers had two hits for the Hawks. Kyzer Anthony scored twice. Starter Gavin Mask picked up the win with three innings of work. He scattered six hits and gave up three runs (one earned) while striking out four and walking just one.

SGSC is 17-13 on the season. Conference play begins Tuesday, March 19, when Andrew College comes to town for a 5 p.m. game on the SGSC campus.
