The 2026 season ended for the South Georgia State College softball Hawks Friday in Cartersville at the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association tournament with a 9-1, six-inning loss to the Gordon State Highlanders. The Hawks made a little noise in the third inning but could only manage one run. Bayli Carver hit a one-out single. Erin Robinson followed with a fielder’s choice that forced Carver at second. It was a no holds barred heavyweight slugfest between the South Georgia State College Hawks and the Georgia Highlands Chargers Friday in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association tournament in Tifton. And it was the Chargers who delivered the knock-out punch on a 10th inning walk-off double in game two to win the tournament and the GCAA championship. The Hawks went into the game undefeated, meaning that to win the title, the Chargers had to beat SGSC twice. The Coffee Trojans rode the momentum for as long as they could. Thursday night in Brunswick, they ran out of gas. The Trojans traveled to Brunswick on a 10-game winning streak that included four consecutive postseason wins in which they outscored their opponents 41-7. Starter Gavin McElroy won three of the four playoff games and the Coffee offense looked as good as anyone’s in the state. However, the Brunswick Pirates, coached by former Coffee Trojan and then-South Georgia College Tiger Greg Roberts, were unimpressed. And they let their feelings be known on Thursday night. Going into Wednesday’s playoff game at ABAC in Tifton, the Georgia Highlands Chargers had a 5-2 record against the South Georgia State College Hawks. It looked like it was going to be 6-2 until two things happened. Hayden Gmerek and the seventh inning. The #2-seed Hawks defeated the #1-seed Chargers 9-5 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association tournament. The CCA baseball team rallied around its seniors on Monday night, defeating the Deerfield-Windsor Knights 13-3 in six innings on Senior Night. The Knights are the #2-ranked team in GIAA Class 3A. Starter Thomas Gentry had a strong outing in what is likely his last appearance on the mound before the playoffs begin. He threw a complete game two-hitter, giving up three runs (all earned), striking out 10 and walking one. The Coffee Trojans have won four playoff games this postseason. Starter Gavin McElroy has been the winning pitcher in three of them. Friday night, McElroy made it a hat trick in game one of the Trojans’ Sweet 16 matchup against the South Paulding Spartans, throwing a five-hit complete game enroute to a 7-2 win. Coffee followed with a 4-3 win in game two to advance to the Elite Eight. The threat of bad weather cast a specter over the scheduled doubleheader.
