The South Georgia State College swim teams traveled to Emanuel College this past weekend to compete in a meet with three other four-year schools. SGSC’s men took second to Emanuel College and the women placed third behind first place Emanuel and second place Brenau University. “It was our first meet that featured a full slate of events since we returned from semester break,” commented Coach CM Jenkins. “We needed to swim the long events in order to prepare for our national meet in March.” Leading the men’s team was sophomore sprinter Zac Elz. Indian Creek Cardinals in thrid to fifth grade were treated to special guest speakers and prize drawings last Friday during our Caring Adult in the Building (CAB) meeting. Dr. Leis, superintendent; Brad Riner, CTAE director; Wade Sumner and Jameon Gaskin, local football stars; and Ms. Morgan, principal, spoke about the importance of coming to school every day and being on time. Learning about history is no mystery for ICE students and they have proved it! During History Mystery Night, students in grades PreKto fifth grade searched for clues about United States history topics such as U.S. presidents, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and the Lewis and Clark expedition. The Coffee County School System will be conducting a Substitute Teacher Workshop on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018, 8 a.m. to Noon at the Board of Education office, 1311 South Peterson Avenue. Two women were jailed and charged for methamphetamine possession last Friday following a search conducted at a local residence. Agents with the Douglas-Coffee Drug Unit executed the search at a home off Haley Circle around 3:30 p.m., Jan. 26, and uncovered approximately 3.5 grams of methamphetamine. Arrested were 32-year-old Amanda Nicole Bailey and 36-year-old Amanda Dee Hiers. Bailey and Hiers were each charged with possession of methamphetamine. Amanda Dee Hiers.

Nate Louis’s three-pointer with 17.4 seconds left in regulation broke a 67-67 tie Saturday afternoon and gave the South Georgia State College Hawks a 70-67 win over the Albany Tech Titans. It was the fourth consecutive win for the Hawks (15-5, 4-2) as they stay in the middle of the GCAA conference standings. Head coach Cory Baldwin said the Hawks and Titans always play close games, and Saturday afternoon was no different. Thursday, Jan. 25, the Alma Police Department transported Maurice Lamar Mitchell, 32 of Hollywood, South Carolina, from an area jail. Mitchell was wanted for the Dec. 7, 2016 theft and criminal damage to property-2nd degree at Hall’s Construction in Alma when a cargo trailer containing over $30,000.00 worth of equipment was stolen after a gate was torn down with a pickup truck. Bryan Preston, Coffee County School Board Chair, was recently appointed to the Georgia School Board Association (GSBA) Board of Directors for District 8. Preston was appointed to fulfill the term of Millard Allen, Glynn County Board of Education, who stepped down for personal reasons. GSBA District 8 encompasses Appling County, Atkinson County, Bacon County, Brantley County, Camden County, Charlton County, Clinch County, Coffee County, Glynn County, Jeff Davis County, Pierce County, Ware County, and Wayne County.
