Cleveland White, age 76, of Douglas, GA, passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Mr. White was born on May 23, 1940, in Dublin, GA to the Berry Pete White and Bulah Phrocine Yeomans White. A Coffee County woman has been charged with drug trafficking following a multi-agency investigation that led to the discovery of approximately four pounds of methamphetamine. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (HSI) informed the Douglas Coffee Drug Unit (DCDU), along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Southeast Regional Drug Enforcement Office (SRDEO), last week that they had intercepted information and evidence indicating several pounds of methamphetamine were being shipped to Coffee County from the West Coast. Coffee County sheriff’s authorities have arrested a 38-year-old Douglas man believed to be responsible for burglarizing a residence earlier this week in the Green Acres community. Deputies responded to a home on Greenfield Circle Monday, March 13, in reference to a burglary. The victim stated she had returned home that evening and discovered several televisions and other items with an estimated total value of over $1,000 were missing. The victim also noted the home’s front door appeared to have been damaged, and one room was in an obvious, disheveled condition. The victim provided the name of Perry Frank Rice of…
Father John Commins, St. Andrews Anglican Church, was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting of Tuesday the 14th of March at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. He spoke about his early career in radio then his career change to become an Anglican priest and ended with his return to radio part time. He produces and hosts a Christian music show Wednesdays 8-10 PM and Sundays 1-3 PM on WDMG (97.9 FM). The Kiwanis club members enjoyed and appreciated his presentation.
Congratulations to the DCCRPD 17U All-Star Basketball team for winning the GRPA State 17U Basketball Tournament. The coaches are Ronnie Graham, Mortell Jordan, and Telvin Thomas. During a regular City Commission Meeting on Monday, March 13, 2017, two City of Douglas retirees were recognized for their years of service. Marvin Rains, who worked for 28 years in the Parks and Recreation Department. During his time with the City, he worked his way up to Grounds Maintenance Supervisor in which he ensured the beautification of the City of Douglas. Mary Lou Gillespie, was employed for 16 ½ years. For the first time in Hawks basketball history, South Georgia State College will be represented at the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Tuesday afternoon, March 14, 2017, the Alma Police Department arrested Marquise Barron, 33, of Alma, following a vehicle pursuit. Barron, known to local law enforcement to have a suspended driver’s license, was observed by officers operating a motor vehicle on Douglas Street near Morris Drive. Barron led officers on a pursuit from Douglas Street to East 6th Street where Barron abandoned his vehicle and was apprehended shortly thereafter. Congratulations to Isaiah Smith who recently won fourth in the state at the All State Art Symposium. The symposium, along with the National Art Honor Society Convention, was held together at Columbus State University. Coffee High art teacher Julie Lord had fourteen students attend that are in NAHS. The group participated in workshops held for the students on Saturday. The All State Art Symposium is the state’s top art competition, and out of the almost 2,000 entries, they accepted 100 in the show.
