Parent/Teacher Conference Day was held last week, and the Coffee Middle School 8th grade had 100% parental contacts. The 8th grade administrators, Wanda Mobley and Sean Strachan, as well as CMS Principal Sherri Berry, are so proud of these teachers for making contact with approximately 600 parents. The Douglas-Coffee County Public Library held a Children’s Halloween Party Saturday, October 22, 2016. Children had the option to dress up in costume. There were various games including a mummy wrap competition, pin the spider on the web, bug/spider toss arts and crafts making ghosts, spiders, puppets, and more! A special interactive Halloween story time was held as well. Children received a small prize for each game in which they participated. Satilla Riverkeeper is proud to report that our river wide cleanup effort on Saturday, October 22, was a success! Volunteers came out to eight sites stretched across over 200 miles of river, from the headwaters in Douglas (Coffee County) to where the river reaches the Atlantic Ocean south of Jekyll Island (Glynn County). 122 participants came out at 9 a.m. Saturday morning despite the cooler fall temperatures. Volunteers picked up trash along the riverbanks for two hours before heading to Twin Oaks Bluegrass Park for a complimentary lunch provided by Firehouse Subs in Waycross and Rivers Alive T-shirts. The Pre-K students at Eastside Elementary enjoyed their first field trip of the school year as they traveled to explore a pumpkin patch farm. The students enjoyed their first bus ride as well during this adventure. A special “thank you” to Coffee County Bus Driver, Wanda Burkett for driving the three classes safely to Tifton and back. George Washington Carver Freshman Campus (GWCFC), along with other Coffee County Schools, was the recipient of the Striving Readers Grant, which is meant to improve literacy for students in twelfth grade and under. This allowed the students of GWCFC to pick out a book of their choosing from a variety of genres. The Striving Readers Grant gifted the school over $300,000 to help increase student literacy. Second grade students from Eastside Elementary School enjoyed a walking field trip last Friday through the City of Douglas. Students visited Douglas City Hall, the Coffee County Courthouse, and the Heritage Station Museum.
