The Douglas Police Department will be conducting a women’s firearms safety and familiarization course March 12 at the Douglas Police Department. Class will begin at 8 a.m. and will conclude at approximately 5 p.m. The course will cover legal issues including use of force and deadly force, shooting fundamentals, and live fire practice. Depending on weather conditions, the morning hours will be spent in the classroom, and participants will travel to the gun range after lunch. The City of Douglas is dedicated to filling potholes and maintaining roadways. With the recent rains and cold temperatures, more potholes are appearing in asphalt around Douglas. The City of Douglas is asking citizens to report all potholes so that workers can properly assess and repair them. When reporting a pothole, citizens should provide the following: name of the street, direction and which lane the pothole is located. Approximately 58 Wiregrass students may achieve a passing grade on their GED® Test due in part to new scoring enhancements by the National GED® Testing Service. The passing score for high school equivalency has been recalibrated from 150 to 145, which means students since January 1, 2014 who had scores between 145 -149 may now be eligible for Georgia’s high school equivalency credential. In addition, the enhancements provide a path for some test-takers to receive college credits. The City of Douglas Water/Wastewater Department would like the public/citizens to be aware of possible surcharging of manholes due to recent heavy rainfalls. There has been a closure of the 400 block of West Gordon from College Ave to Daughtry Ave until further notice due to a manhole surcharging at this location. The Coffee County 911 Center has been notified of this closure so emergency vehicles will not have any problems accessing any residential property. The Coffee County School District Spelling Bee was held in the Coffee Middle School Auditorium Wednesday, February 3 at 9 a.m. After a welcome from Coffee High Counselor Angelique Austin and a reading of the rules and regulations by Assistant Superintendent Dr. Bernie Evans, participants from Coffee Middle School and each of the county’s eight elementary schools began competing.
