Virginia Tanner, age 93, of Douglas, GA passed away on Monday, October 12, 2015, at Shady Acres Health and Rehab following an extended illness. Mrs. Tanner was born on October 2, 1922, in Douglas, GA to the late Mitchell Lewis and Victoria Kight Lewis. Julie Macomber was the speaker at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting of Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. Julie spoke about “The Big Band Era : 1935-1945,” a paper written by her late grandfather, Charles Rudibaugh, Jr., who was a Kiwanian in Ohio for over 60 years. The program covered the greats like Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Jimmy Dorsey, and Benny Goodman among many others. The Satilla Regional Library System held its bookmark art contest winners’ ceremony on Saturday, October 10, at the Douglas-Coffee County Public Library. The contest was held from September 8 through October 2. Participants in Atkinson and Coffee Counties drew a bookmark with the theme “Why Reading Is Fun!” and submitted it to any Satilla Regional Library branch in person. The Douglas Visitor Information Center (Ashley-Slater House) will offer everyone a chance to kickoff Halloween with two candlelight ghost tours as an October promotion. The tours will be held Thursday, October 22 at 6:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. at the historic Ashley-Slater House located at 211 S. Gaskin Avenue. Don Edward Adams, Jr., aka L’il Don, 30, and Ashleigh Brooke Johnson, 28, both from Douglas, were indicted by a federal grand jury and charged with conspiring to traffic oxycodone, a Schedule II controlled substance. Both defendants have appeared for their arraignments before United States Magistrate Judge R. Stan Baker in the federal courthouse in Waycross and were ordered to remain detained pending a trial or other disposition.
