The Beef Industry Scholarship Challenge (BISC) is a unique contest that focuses on the student’s knowledge and skills in all areas of beef production management. Each year, the Georgia Jr. Cattlemen’s Association puts on the challenge that awards over $10,000 in scholarships for students to pursue a college degree of their choice. The challenge was divided between Sr. (11th and 12th Grades) and Jr. Divisions (9th and 10th grades). A community-wide blood drive in memory of Malik Sparkman will be held Monday, July 13, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Central Square Complex as part of the Badges for Life Blood Drive, an annual event hosted by local first responders and law enforcement. 18-year-old Sparkman was a star Trojan’s linebacker for Coffee High School before he lost his battle with cancer on May 17. Mr. James Homer Day, age 79, of Ambrose, GA passed away on Friday June 19, 2015 at his home following an extended ilness. Mr. Day was born on December 17, 1935 in Coffee County, GA to the late Homer Day and Fannie Mae McCallum Day. Mr. Day is survived by his wife: Margaret Day, Ambrose, GA; two daughters: Ronda D. The Satilla Regional Library System hosted a visit from Ms. Raven of the Jacksonville Zoo on Wednesday, June 17. Ms. Raven performed an animal show that included a collared dove, tortoise, and alligator. She talked about mammals, the history of each animal she brought to share with the audience, and discussed each one in depth. She held an audience participation in which the children had the opportunity to pet the alligator at the conclusion of the show. Commander Bart McCulloch of the Douglas Police Department spoke at the Douglas Kiwanis Club meeting Tuesday, June 16, at the Flyin’ Cowboy restaurant. Commander McCulloch briefed the members on the Citizens Police Academy, which is an eight-week course designed to educate local citizens in all aspects of police work. The first class starts on August 13, 2015, and runs through October 3. The City of Douglas and community partners will host a park appreciation day at Roundtree Park beginning at 4:30 p.m. this Saturday, June 20. Community agencies will be celebrating the re-opening of the park with various activities for citizens to enjoy. The Douglas Fire Department and Douglas Police Department will provide educational resources, as well as limited free refreshments. At Roundtree Park, citizens may enjoy playground equipment, basketball courts, baseball field, and the splash pad.
