As Ebola scares crop up around the country, hospitals nationwide including Coffee Regional Medical Center are preparing for what to do if they find themselves face-to-face with the deadly virus. Coffee Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Preparedness Program is in place to train, educate, and to prepare for any potential dangers to public health. South Georgia State College has realized a slight increase in its enrollment for the fall 2014 semester. According to SGSC’s enrollment services department, the head count for fall 2014 is 2,611 students, besting fall 2013’s head count of 2,572, for a 1.5 percent increase. The student body boasts students from 344 high schools, 106 Georgia counties, 27 other states, and 10 foreign countries. College officials attribute the increase to multiple factors, but it is primarily due to the expansion of the college’s dual enrollment program, increased marketing efforts, and the launch of a second bachelor’s degree. As the new season of fall has arrived, the Pre-K students at Eastside Elementary School were treated to the arrival of Johnny Appleseed. Mr. Appleseed shared his story of how he was given the name Johnny Appleseed as well as all the travels he has made during his lifetime. Mr. Appleseed shared with the young student how important the character education word for October, cooperation, has been for him meeting many new friends throughout his travels. South Georgia State College students celebrated Constitution Day by attending an informative lecture and discussion about a topic relevant to today’s society when it comes to the 227-year-old Constitution. This year’s topic, presented by Assistant Professor of Political Science Frank Pridemore, was “Can One Person Really Make a Difference?” Students were encouraged by the story of Clarence Earl Gideon, who was one poor man determined to have his voice heard, and ultimately, his voice led to the establishing of a person’s right to a court-appointed lawyer if he cannot afford one of his own. Thursday, Oct. 9 was a busy day at Eastside Elementary. The first Parent/Teacher Conference marked the end of the first nine weeks of school. Parents were able to meet with teachers to discuss their child’s progress and were given helpful study tips. Parents were also encouraged to participate in a survey, which helps to bring in extra funding for our schools and to donate blood to Oneblood. During the week of Fire Safety in Georgia, October 6-10, the Pre-K students at Eastside Elementary participated in many fire safety activities in order to become fire wise. The children learned the importance of having a family fire drill and establishing a safe meeting place near their home. The young Pre-K students even had homework to see if they had a working smoke alarm in their home and if so to find out where it is located.
