It’s Championship Watch time again – this time on the pitch. The Atkinson County Rebels men’s soccer team will face the Georgia Military College high school soccer team in the Class A Division II state title game in Thomaston on Friday. The Irwin County Indians’ women’s team is also in the finals.
The Rebels made it to the championship game by defeating the Metter Tigers 3-1 on Tuesday. ATCO scored two goals in the first half and one in the second half. The Tigers, meanwhile, found the net just once.
Carlos Otero scored two goals while Rodrigo Trejo scored once. Kris Galarza and Brayden Quintanilla had assists. Keeper Sammy Chavez had four saves.
Friday’s matchup will be the second time the Rebels and Bulldogs have played each other this season. The two teams met in Milledgeville on April 2. GMC won the game 2-0.
This is the third straight year that Atkinson County has advanced to the finals. Two years ago, they fell to GMC 4-1. Last year, the Lake Oconee Tigers edged the Rebels 3-1 for the championship.
ATCO is 15-6 overall. They finished the season 9-1 in region play.
The Rebels aren’t the only area team playing for a championship on Friday. The Irwin County Indians women’s team is facing Trion for a title of their own in the same classification — Class A Division II.
In the semi-finals on May 7, Irwin beat Screven County 2-1 while Trion beat Portal 3-0. Irwin has won eight in a row. Caroline Harper and Avery Conner scored Irwin’s goals. In 19 games, the 18-1 Indians have scored 120 goals and allowed just 16. Irwin’s only loss came to Thomasville, which won a state title today in Class A Division I.
