A quick response from law enforcement officers in Telfair County saved the life of a woman who had driven her vehicle into a creek, according to Telfair County Sheriff Sim Davidson. One of the officers who responded to the scene is a Douglas native.
In a Facebook post, Sheriff Davidson wrote that officers and first responders received a call that a vehicle had driven into a creek in western Telfair County. The victim called 911 and told dispatchers the vehicle was taking on water at a rapid rate. She couldn’t get out and she couldn’t swim. Several minutes later, Captain Bobby Solomon, Sergeant Macy Deen, Corporals Daniel Baldino and Dylan Warren, and deputies Chris Holland and Jacob Johnson, who is from Douglas, arrived on the scene to render aid.
Corporals Baldino and Warren, along with McRae-Helena Police Officer Kaleb Knowles immediately shed their duty gear and entered the creek and made their way to the vehicle. They found that the water had already risen to the victim’s chin at this time. Unable to gain immediate entry to the vehicle, Corporal Warren shattered the window. Corporal Baldino and Officer Knowles removed the victim and took her to the roadway for EMS evaluation. She was later released under her own care.
“Had they not responded so quickly and without hesitation, the final outcome could have been tragic. A heartfelt thanks to all who responded to this incident, and praise God for the positive outcome,” wrote Sheriff Davidson.
