The CCA Lady Patriots did something yesterday that I’ve never seen before. It’s not just that they won – they’ve done that a lot over the last two years – but it’s the manner in which they won. The Lady Patriots defeated the First Preparatory Christian Academy Highlanders by a combined score of 40-0 in a doubleheader on Senior Night in Douglas Tuesday. The game one score was 12-0 while game two was 28-0. The two games lasted seven innings total – four in game one and three in game two. CCA scored in every inning, with the lowest run…

Former Trojans in the college ranks had another good weekend on the football field last weekend. One has made a return to action following an injury while another entered the discussion for the first time this season. Georgia Military’s Tyrese Woodgett, who is arguably having the best year of any Coffee High alum, had another solid performance on Saturday. The Bulldogs faced Louisburg College and won easily, 69-14. Woodgett led all GMC backs with 213 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns. The Bulldogs are 6-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Woodgett, a freshman, has rushed for 817 yards…
The Coffee Lady Trojans won their 19th game of the season Thursday afternoon, defeating the Jeff Davis County Yellow Jackets 6-2 in Hazlehurst. The Lady Trojans scored three in the second and three in the seventh. Jeff Davis, meanwhile, managed just two runs in the third. Karlee Thomas, RiRi Paulk, and Maggie Brown each had two hits for Coffee. Brown and Jocelyn Fender drove in two while Paulk scored twice. One of Thomas’s hits was a triple. Brown threw an 89-pitch complete game, allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits. She struck out six and walked just one. Coffee…
The Coffee Trojans are on the wrong side of .500 after a 35-14 loss to the Lee County Trojans Friday night at Jardine Stadium. The loss drops Coffee to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in region competition. Both Lee and Coffee scored on their first possessions. Coffee scored again in the second quarter. KJ Debruce scored both of Coffee’s touchdowns on runs of 64 yards and four yards. Lee, however, found the end zone four times in the first half and took a 28-14 lead into halftime. Lee scored again in the third quarter to take a 35-14 lead. With about…
In the final scene of the 2000 football movie The Replacements, as “Heroes” by The Wallflowers plays, Washington Sentinels head coach Jimmy McGinty, played by the late Gene Hackman, sums up the experience the Sentinels’ replacement players enjoyed by stating, “Every athlete dreams of a second chance. These men lived it.” McGinty’s statement rings true but seldom do athletes get to live it. You can count Atkinson County Rebels assistant football coach and former Coffee Trojan Brandon Roe as one of the lucky ones who get that fleeting second chance. Roe, a standout receiver and defensive back at Coffee High…
The CCA Lady Patriots are the GIAA Class A/AA District 6 champions after defeating the David Emanuel Academy Eagles 6-1 Thursday in Stillmore. Tuesday, the Lady Patriots squeaked one out at home against the Robert Toombs Christian Academy Lady Crusaders 5-4. In Thursday’s championship game, CCA staked its claim in the first inning with four runs. With one out, Cadence Cravey walked. Emma Gourley followed with single that moved Cravey to third. Gourley stole second, putting both runners in scoring position. Mattie Lewis reached on an error that scored Cravey and moved Gourley to third. Abrah Harris was hit by…
This is normally the spot where we would be talking about another go-ahead, potentially game-winning home run from the bat of the CCA Lady Patriots’ freshman catcher Mattie Lewis. That did happen and we are going to get to that in a few. Her home run came in the top of the seventh with the Lady Patriots trailing 2-1 against the Terrell Academy Eagles Monday afternoon. It sparked a nine-run seventh-inning rally that ended in a 10-2 CCA victory. But to fully appreciate CCA’s last-minute offensive onslaught, we need to back things up an inning. The Eagles were threatening to…
