Saturday afternoon, Coffee County firefighters responded to a devastating house fire in Baymeadows that resulted in a total loss of the home. Residents were there at the time of the blaze but thankfully, no injuries were reported. Around 6:30 p.m., the call came in and multiple units were dispatched to the location. When firefighters arrived, the home was fully involved. The fire started near the back of the house. Early speculation centered around a lightning strike as the cause of the fire. When the fire happened, a storm system that featured significant lightning was making its way through the county.…
On July 26, 2025 at around 1 a.m., deputies responded to the boat ramp at Baymeadows in response to a domestic incident that ended in two alleged physical altercations. As a result, three individuals were arrested and jailed. The incident report from the sheriff’s office states that a group of people pulled up to the boat ramp. One of them, Daymon Clark, 25, of Broxton, started arguing with Brittney Surrency, 28, who was already at the boat ramp and in the water. The Coffee Trojans defeated the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes in 2025’s preseason scrimmage at Jardine Stadium. The junior varsity squads played the first quarter; the Trojans won that quarter 13-0. The teams reset the scoreboard for the second quarter and the varsity units played each other for the remainder of the game. The score was 0-0 at halftime and 6-3 at the end of the third quarter. Coffee ended up winning the game 12-10. The Trojans are off next week before welcoming the Bainbridge Bearcats to town for the regular season opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
A Douglas police officer arrested a 63-year-old woman on drug charges after he heard her screaming and attempting to take her clothes off around 1 a.m. on July 21, 2025. The incident report states that the officer was patrolling the area of East College Park Drive and Mark Hannah Street when the officer heard a woman screaming. Two of the drivers involved in a three-car accident Sunday afternoon on the Willacoochee Highway were cited for DUI. One individual was transported from the scene with visible but non-life-threatening injuries. According to an accident report from the Georgia State Patrol, Robin Cummings of Orlando was driving an EZ-Go golf cart north on the Willacoochee Highway when the vehicle turned left in front of a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Larry Joel Squires of Douglas, who was traveling south. Broxton native and educator Michael Dockery has announced his candidacy for the state House of Representatives District 176 seat. Dockery, a Republican, currently lives in Waycross and teaches at Pierce County Middle School. The District 176 seat is currently held by Waycross attorney and fellow Republican James Burchett. On July 21, 2025, an individual who was allegedly driving a vehicle with a suspended registration and no insurance on a suspended license led officers on a chase – directly to her house. According to a report from the Douglas Police Department, an officer saw a 2013 Kia Optima in the Jet store on Southwest Bowens Mill Road. For the third time in nine weeks, Christopher Brent Johnson, 44, has been arrested and jailed. This latest incident, which took place on July 24, 2025, involves the most serious allegations of the three incidents. Johnson was released after the first two arrests. This time, however, he remains in jail. On Thursday, July 24, 2025, at approximately 2:55 a.m., detectives with the Douglas-Coffee County Drug Unit conducted a traffic stop on Johnson. Alexis Davis, daughter of Charles and Debbie Davis of West Green, has had quite a summer. The third-year law student at Mercer University served in Gov. Brian Kemp’s office as an intern and recently finished fifth in the ABA client counseling competition. Davis’s loss came at the hands of the eventual competition champions. On July 17, 2025, deputies arrested a man who allegedly used a family member’s debit and credit card without her permission. The incidents happened between June 14-23 and were reported to the sheriff’s office on July 3, 2025. The victim went to the sheriff’s office to report the crimes.
