Irineo Sanchez, age 91, of Douglas, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at Coffee Regional Medical Center. Mr. Sanchez was born on June 28, 1934, son to the late Jose Sanchez and the late Eugenia Torres. Douglas Rotary Club supports community organizations throughout the year and ended 2025 by recognizing the regional chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and their director, Tommy Watkins, at the club’s December 11 meeting. Members enjoyed an update on FCA successes and plans for service. Earlier this week, Sheriff Fred Cole presented a check for $25,380 to Satilla Advocacy Services. The sheriff’s office raised the funds through the first-ever Sheriff’s Promise Golf Tournament. In October 2024, the Community Foundation of Coffee County awarded a $12,500 grant to the City of Douglas to assist with improvements at Douglas-Coffee County Veterans Park. These funds supported several meaningful upgrades, including the installation of the John S. Gibson Memorial, a brick walkway leading to the Fallen Soldier Statue, re-painting of the insignia in the middle of Veterans Park, planting two trees beside the memorial, and the addition of eight metal benches placed on concrete pads. On December 11, 2025 at approximately 5:36 p.m. the Douglas Police Department received a report of a shooting in the area of North Pearl Avenue. Responding officers were advised that one individual had sustained a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to the hospital by private vehicle prior to officers’ arrival. At this time, investigators are actively working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office was notified on December 9, 2025, by the Department of Family and Children Services regarding a possible case of child abuse. DFACS advised they had been contacted amid concerns that a child may have been physically abused by a parent. A preliminary investigation was conducted and bruising was seen on the child’s upper back. Based on those findings, DFACS notified CCSO for further investigation. CCSO investigators initiated an inquiry and determined that approximately 15 days earlier, the child had reportedly been struck multiple times on the back with a cellphone charging cable by an individual…
Wiregrass Georgia Technical College recently held a renaming ceremony to honor the Taylor family for their generous contributions and investment in Wiregrass’s future workforce. The clinic has been officially renamed the “Student Health Clinic, generously donated by the Taylor Family.” The Taylor family, owners of Taylor Insurance Services, has been deeply involved in South Georgia for nearly fifty years through their service, investment, and unwavering commitment to the community.
