Mary Ellen Kirkland, age 79, of Douglas, GA passed away Thursday, January 28, 2016 at her home following an extended illness. Mrs. Kirkland was born August 5,1936, in Savannah, GA to the late Ottis Isaac Greenway and the late Wilma Audrey Sims Greenway. Survivors include: her two sons: Fred Kirkland of Douglas, GA; and Moshe Kirkland of Midville, GA; one daughter: Lynn Williams of Douglas, GA; three grandchikldren : Marry Curry, Tony Leedom and Kristina Everhart and five great grandchildren. George Washington Carver Freshman Campus (GWCFC) had two students compete in an FFA competition held in Echols County on Jan. 26. National Organization of FFA member Dawson Adams placed first in the Sub-Area Prepared Public Speaking CDE and will advance to compete at the Area CDE in two weeks. Dawson had to prepare and recite a 4-6 minute speech about a topic related to agriculture. He chose to speak on the nuisance weed called pigweed and how today’s cotton farmers can implement various control measures to ensure a healthy and sustainable cotton crop. GBI Director Vernon Keenan is pleased to announce the release of the Georgia Child Fatality Review Panel’s 2014 annual report. This report summarizes the Child Fatality Review Panel’s analyses of child deaths occurring in Georgia during 2014. Cooperation of the various agencies conducting investigations and gathering data concerning child deaths continues to improve, which has increased the quality of information the Panel has reviewed. In 2014, a total of 503 child deaths were deemed reviewable by death certificate data. Before the Christmas break, 8th grade students at Coffee Middle School were visited by probation officers with the Department of Juvenile Justice. Students were covering a unit on government and the justice system. They were able to ask questions related to the unit and also received important information on bullying, texting, and issues with regards to the juvenile and adult code.
