Several citizens have raised concerns about rumored City of Douglas plans to build a roundabout at the Touchton Drive and Red Bird Drive intersection of Touchton Woods subdivision. A roundabout is a type of circular intersection or junction in which road traffic flows almost continuously in one direction around a central island. The City meet with the Georgia Department of Transportation two or three years ago regarding placing roundabouts in certain areas of Douglas as traffic calming devices. Mrs. Cecelia Maxine Martsching Deen, age 72, of Douglas passed away February 16, 2016, at the Coffee Regional Medical Center, following a short illness. She was born December 31, 1943 to the late James Martsching and the late Lola Carnes Martsching. Mrs. Deen, a native of Ottumwa, Iowa, was a retired employee of Elixer Industries. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Newton Deen. Over 440 students from area schools convened on South Georgia State College’s Douglas Campus on Friday, Feb. 5 for the Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Participants from Appling, Atkinson, Brantley, Charlton, Coffee, Echols, Pierce, and Ware counties brought in their best science fair projects to be judged using several criteria, including thoroughness, proper source citation and adherence to the scientific method. Chelsea Lyons led the offensive attack by going 5-for-8 on the weekend with one RBI and four stolen bases. The City of Douglas and Transwaste are offering a Junk Drop-Off Day on Saturday, February 20 to help citizens get rid of the excess trash. It will be held at Wheeler Park, located on W. Gordon Street, from 8 a.m to noon. A dumpster will be placed to offer residents a way to dispose of large, non-hazardous items and electronic items at no cost. The Douglas Police Department is offering a Citizen Police Academy course that will begin Thursday, March 3 at the Douglas Police Department located at 225 W. Bryan Street. The course will last eight (8) weeks, and a light meal and refreshments are provided. The course covers numerous areas and is designed to introduce and inform citizens of the role of law enforcement in the community and familiarize them with some of the applications of law. SGSC’s swim teams soared this past weekend at the Small College Championship Meet held at the SGSC Wellness Center on the Douglas Campus. Both the women’s and men’s teams captured first followed by Thomas University winning second place and Point University in third. Carolyn Ives and Caitlyn Meece both earned three first place individual finishes, while Kiana Ocasio-Molina secured two, and Nikki Daley from Warner Robins won first in the 100 freestyle. Pitcher Gayden Hatcher held up his end of the bargain, but the SGSC Hawks baseball team couldn’t use Hatcher’s strong showing against the University of South Carolina (USC)-Salkehatchie to pull out a win. SGSC lost 2-1 in seven innings in the opening game of the doubleheader Feb. 13 in Allendale, S.C. USC-Salkehatchie had no answer for Hatcher, who kept runners off the base paths during his appearance.
